The Edge of Barine
Arc Location System (ALS)
This is the primary means of designating location around the Ring for all official and even most informal communication. This system divides the Ring into four arcs (northern, southern, eastern, western) and then further divides those arcs into five zones each which are numbered in a counter-clockwise fashion from 1 to 5, resulting in a total of 20 designated zones. The width of each zone was chosen to represent the distance that could be traveled by an average cart in a single day in order to easily facilitate travel planning. The resulting designation given to each zone is a single letter (representing the arc) and a single number (representing the zone); for instance, the Festival of Leaves is held in zone N1.
